Soft Cut Gaskets and Sheets

Soft cut gaskets are a group of gaskets for general service. The fibres can be aramid, glass fibre, carbon or inorganic material. Common for all is that the fibres are bonded together with other filler materials and encapsulated with an elastomeric binder (NBR,SBR etc.).

The gaskets may have different temperature and pressure ranges.

Types:

  • BAM 6000 : Inorganic fibergasket based on a combination of aramide fibre and mineralwool. The binder is based on Nitrile. The material is free of N - nitrosoamines which is health destrucive.
  • IFG 5500 : A specially formulated inorganic asbestos-free fibre gasketing which exceeds the parameters of aramid fibre reinforced gasketing in thermal stability, torque retention, sealability and weight loss.As inorganic fibres do not oxidize IFG provides greater thermal and dimensional stability during process cycling.
  • Paper sheeting : A premium quality cellulose fibre impregnated with a glue/glycerine composition. An economical general purpose material with excellent oil and fuel resistance, withstanding solvents. Principally used in automotive applications.
  • Blue Gard 3000 : Provides superior sealability and excellent creep relaxation. BLUE GARD 3000 gasketing is produced from special blends of synthetic fibres, fillers and elastomeric binders. BLUE GARD 3000 gasketing serves as a general purpose gasket material across a wide range of industrial applications.

Graphite Gaskets

Graphite is used very often as a packing material. Expanded graphite is used in production of flat gaskets and packings. This material is produced in a special process where natural graphite is expanded under extremely high temperatures after mixing with chemicals. After removing the chemicals again, the expanded flakes are then pressed into sheets or rolled to a defined density of, e.g. 0.7 or 1.0 g/cm3. The foil may be used as filler material in spiral wound gaskets or as a seal in serrated gaskets.

The temperature range is –200°C to +450°C. This packing has excellent chemical resistance and has neither cold nor hot flow. As the material is already millions of years old, it has no ageing problems.

  • Graphite with steel layer (graflam)
The sheets are often pressed together with a metal insert. This strengthens/stabilises the gasket so that it may be adjusted and fitted without being damaged. The insert is usually made in S316 stainless steel or nickel. When using two S316 stainless inserts, these will usually have a thickness of 0.05mm each or 0.013mm when using nickel inserts. The inserts are bonded to the graphite.
  • Tanged (Perforated layer in S316)
A tang core is used more and more as an insert and consists of a 0.10mm thick S316 stainless steel insert that is not bonded. The steel core is perforated and has small sharp teeth that stick into the graphite and give a robust easy-to-use gasket. We do not recommend manual cutting of this gasket, as this may give a poor and sometimes dangerous results. Vestpak AS always water cuts tanged materials.

PTFE

PTFE

PTFE is used where extreme resistance is required to seal against toxic and highly corrosive media.

PTFE is almost totally chemically inert and is only attacked by molten alkalis, metals and certain fluorine compounds at elevated temperatures. Suitable for sealing corrosive chemicals such as Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, chlorine gas and applications in the food and pharmacautical industries.Temperature range up to 250 C.

  • Glas filled PTFE
The PTFE resin is filled with glass fibre; this improves the creep resistance of the material and reduces the cold flow characteristics, making it more suitable for use as a sheet gasket material. The addition of glass fibre has an insignificant effect in the chemical resistance of the material.

Gylon

Gylon®

Garlock GYLON® gasketing is a truly superior and unique material. The exclusive properties of GLYON gasketing are combined to deliver its superior performance to comply with today's clean air requirements through sealability and torque retention.

Asbestos-free GYLON gasketing routinely out performs all conventional PTFE products by drastically minimizing gasket creep and cold flow problems.
Typical conditions for GYLON gasketing are found in the food, chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper plants and pharmaceutical industries

Insulation set

Insulation Set

Gasket sets for insulating flanges are used to protect the flange from corrosion in places where a seal is required between flanges made from different metals. The three most commonly used ones are Pikotek, Phenolic and PUR.

The sets are used for electrical insulation of pipeline sections, to control cathodic protection and prevent the flow of electrostatic charges along pipelines.

Vestpak supplies three standard types of gasket sets for insulation: to fit flanges with an elevated surface, straight surface and ring grooves.

Pikotek manufactures both high- and low-pressure insulating gaskets for the following standards: ANSI B16.5, B16.47 A & B, API 6A, DIN, BS, AS and others.
